Second Monday In October: Columbus Day
(US Observed): -- A national holiday in many countries of the
Americas and elsewhere which officially celebrates the anniversary
of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas on October 12,
1492 (Julian Calendar). The landing is celebrated as "Columbus
Day" in the United States. Since 1971, the holiday has been
attributed to the second Monday in October. It is generally
observed nowadays by banks, the bond market, the U.S. Postal
Service, other federal agencies, most state government offices,
many businesses, and most school districts. Some businesses and
some stock exchanges remain open, and some states and
municipalities abstain from observing the holiday. The traditional
date of the holiday also adjoins the anniversary of the United
States Navy (founded October 13, 1775), and thus both occasions
are customarily observed by the Navy and the Marine Corps with
either a 72- or 96-hour liberty period. The first celebration of
Columbus Day was held in New York City on October 12, 1792, the
300th anniversary of Columbus' arrival in the Americas. On Sale @

Second Monday In October: Indigenous
Peoples' Day: -- A day that honors the cultures and histories of
the Native American people who discovered America far earlier
thatn Lief Erikson and Christopher Columbus!. The day is centered
around reflecting on their tribal roots and the tragic stories
that hurt but strengthened their communities. The first seed of
Indigenous Peoples' Day was planted at a U.N. international
conference on discrimination in 1977. The first state to recognize
the day was South Dakota in 1989. Berkeley, California, and Santa
Cruz followed suit. Although the day was still considered Columbus
Day up to 1937, many people began calling it Indigenous Peoples'
Day to celebrate the rich culture and the lives of the Native
American people. For the Native Americans, Columbus Day was always
hurtful as it glorified the violent past constituting 500 years of
colonial torture and oppression by European explorers like
Columbus and those who settled in America. Indigenous Peoples' Day
draws attention to the pain, trauma, and broken promises that were
erased by the celebration of Columbus Day. Before his arrival, the
indigenous folk were successful self-sufficient communities that
sustained life for thousands of years. Year by year, the movement
to change Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples' Day spreads to more
and more states, towns, and cities across the United States of
America. Indigenous Peoples' Day celebrates, recognizes, and
honors the beautiful traditions and cultures of the Indigenous
People, not just in America, but around the world. Their way of
life and culture carries wisdom and valuable insights into how we
can live life more sustainably. Today, 14 U.S. states celebrate
Indigenous Peoples' Day and not Columbus Day, as well as the
District Of Columbia. More than 130 cities including Arlington,
Amherst, Cambridge, Brookline, Marblehead, Great Barrington,
Northampton, Provincetown, Somerville, and Salem also celebrate
Indigenous Peoples' Day. Many organizations are seeking to address
the lack of access indigenous people have to higher education and
have created scholarships to help address this. On Sale @ 15% Off

Moses: The Law of Moses (Hebrew: Torat Moshe) (The Mosaic Law):
The Three Annual Festivals: (The Three Pilgrimage Festivals
[Hebrew: Shalosh Regalim, "Three Journeys By Foot, Three
Pilgrimages"]): The Festival Of The Final Harvest (Hebrew:
Sukkot, "Booths") (The Feast Of Tabernacles, The Feast
Of Booths, The Festival Of Ingathering, The Harvest Festival):
Shemini Atzeret: -- The Hebrew holiday of Sukkot ends at sundown
on the 22nd day of the month of Tishrei, having lasted since
sundown eight days prior for a total of seven days in the Hebrew
calendar and eight days in the Gregorian calendar. In Exodus 23:14
of the Torah, Moses recounts what he had been commanded by THE
LORD to convey to his people: "Each year you must celebrate
three festivals in my honor." Of the third of these
festivals, it goes on to say in Exodus 23:16-17: "Finally,
celebrate the Festival of the Final Harvestc at the end of the
harvest season, when you have harvested all the crops from your
fields." Sukkot one of the Three Pilgrimage Festivals on
which Israelites were commanded to make a pilgrimage to the Temple
in Jerusalem. Biblically an autumn harvest festival and a
commemoration of the Exodus from Egypt, Sukkot's modern observance
is characterized by festive meals in a sukkah, a temporary
wood-covered hut. The double significance of Sukkot refers to the
one mentioned in the Book of Exodus as agricultural in nature --
"Festival of Ingathering at the year's end" (Exodus
34:22) -- and marks the end of the harvest time and thus of the
agricultural year in the Land of Israel. The more elaborate
religious significance from the Book of Leviticus is that of
commemorating the Exodus and the dependence of the Israelites on
the will of God (Leviticus 23:42-43). As an extension of its
harvest festival community roots, the idea of welcoming all guests
and extending hospitality is intrinsic to the celebration. Actual
and symbolic "guests" (Aramaic: ushpizin) are invited to
participate by visiting the sukkah. Specifically, seven
"forefathers" of the Jewish people are to be welcomed
during the seven days of the festival, in this order: Day 1:
Abraham; Day 2: Isaac; Day 3: Jacob; Day 4: Moses; Day 5: Aaron;
Day 6: Joseph; Day 7: David. The holiday lasts seven days. The
first day (and second day in the diaspora) is a Shabbat-like
holiday when work is forbidden. This is followed by intermediate
days called Chol HaMoed, during which certain work is permitted.
The festival is closed with another Shabbat-like holiday called
Shemini Atzeret (one day in the Land of Israel, two days in the
diaspora, where the second day is called Simchat Torah). The
Hebrew word sukkot is the plural of sukkah ('booth' or
'tabernacle') which is a walled structure covered with s'chach
(plant material, such as overgrowth or palm leaves). A sukkah is
the name of the temporary dwelling in which farmers would live
during harvesting, reinforcing agricultural significance of the
holiday introduced in the Book of Exodus. As stated in Leviticus,
it is also reminiscent of the type of fragile dwellings in which
the Israelites dwelled during their 40 years of travel in the
desert after the Exodus from slavery in Egypt. Throughout the
holiday, meals are eaten inside the sukkah and many people sleep
there as well. On each day of the holiday it is a mitzvah, or
commandment, to 'dwell' in the sukkah and to perform a shaking
ceremony with a lulav (a palm frond, then bound with myrtle and
willow), and an etrog (the fruit of a citron tree) (collectively
known as the four species). The fragile shelter, the
'now-three-item' lulav, the etrog, the revived Simchat Beit
HaShoeivah celebration's focus on water and rainfall and the
holiday's harvest festival roots draw attention to people's
dependence on the natural environment. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

October 13: U.S. Navy's Birthday: -- A
day to celebrate and recognize the brave men and women who have
served our country - past and present. Established during the
Revolutionary War, the original Continental Navy was formed,
disbanded, and then reestablished nearly 10 years later. Today
it's the largest and most capable navy in the world, with the
highest combined battle fleet tonnage. The Navy also boasts the
world's largest aircraft carrier fleet, over 300,000 active
personnel, and nearly 100,000 in the Ready Reserve. The United
States Navy (USN) is the United States Armed Forces' naval warfare
service branch and one of the seven uniformed services of the
United States. The U.S. Navy is currently the largest, most
powerful navy in the world, with the highest combined battle fleet
tonnage. The service has over 340,000 personnel on active duty and
more than 71,000 in the Navy Reserve. With only two ships and a
crew of eighty men, the Continental Navy was born on October 13,
1775. The decision of the Continental Congress set the Continental
Navy on course to carry arms to the British army, not to defend
against it. However, these two ships and crew represent the birth
of the United States Navy. Throughout the Revolutionary War, their
importance grew. Today, the United States maintains 40 naval bases
across the country, including the world's largest Naval Station
Norfolk, in Norfolk, Virginia. Below the sea, submarines became a
part of the Navy during World War II. While experiments began in
the late 1800s and during the Civil War, they did not become a
large part of the Navy inventory until World War II. At that
point, subs became necessary for surveillance and rescue, even
though they were also armed. With the advent of the airplane, the
Naval ships became vital stations for the Airforce as well. As a
result, the Navy modified ships into floating landing strips.
Today, joint Naval and Airbases such as Pearl Harbor-Hickam
provide the country with sea and air defense fleets. On Sale @ 15%

October 13: English Language Day: --
Commemorate the day Parliament was opened for the first time by a
speech in English, in 1362, rather than in French. The day also
celebrates the universality of the language, and how it has
evolved over the centuries. Scholars believe that there is no true
version of the language, as over 7,000 variations of English can
be found in the world right now. English has also adopted many
words from other languages. Other than speech, English has also
become the primary language for movies and TV shows, literature,
and music. The English Project launched the world's first-ever
English Language Day on October 13 in 2009. English Language Day
is celebrated to commemorate October 13, 1362, when Parliament was
opened for the first time by a speech in English, instead of
French. In the same Parliament, a Statute of Pleading was approved
that allowed members in debate to use the English language. This
made English the official language of law and law-making. English
is a vast language. There are more than 250,000 words in an Oxford
Dictionary - minus a lot of technical, scientific, and slang
words. English is probably the only language with as many synonyms
for many of its words, largely because of its enormous absorbing
capacity - borrowing words from as many languages as possible,
including German, Greek, Portuguese, French, Latin, and even the
language of the colonies where it became widespread. Years of
colonialism meant that English now also had words from Asian, the
Caribbean, and African cultures. The English language has always
been eager to adopt and adapt words and phrases from other
languages. The willingness to adapt itself is probably what makes
English so different from other languages, such as French. The
English language is easily the most broadly used and spoken
language on the planet, and it enjoys a good reputation for
adapting words, concepts, and cultural influences from around the
world. This adds to the language's enormous vocabulary, one that
is full of odd rules, spellings, and grammar. English Language Day
remembers and celebrates the incredible popularity of the language
and even its eccentricities! On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till

October 13, 1307: Religion: The History
Of Religion: Abrahamic Religions: Christianity: The Catholic
Church (The Roman Catholic Church): Military Orders: The Knights
Templar (The Poor Fellow-Soldiers Of Christ And Of The Temple Of
Solomon): Arrests, Charges And Dissolution Of The Knights Templar:
Friday The Thirteenth: -- At dawn on Friday the 13th, King Philip
IV of France ("Philip The Fair") orders the Grand Master
of the Knights Templar Jacques de Molay and hundreds of other
French Templars to be simultaneously arrested by Philip's agents,
to be later tortured into a "confession" of heresy. The
arrest warrant started with the phrase: "Dieu n'est pas
content, nous avons des ennemis de la foi dans le Royaume"
["God is not pleased. We have enemies of the faith in the
kingdom"]. Claims were made that during Templar admissions
ceremonies, recruits were forced to spit on the Cross, deny
Christ, and engage in indecent kissing; brethren were also accused
of worshipping idols, and the order was said to have encouraged
homosexual practices. These allegations, though, were highly
politicised without any real evidence.] Still, the Templars were
charged with numerous other offences such as financial corruption,
fraud, and secrecy. Many of the accused confessed to these charges
under torture (even though the Templars denied being tortured in
their written confessions), and their confessions, even though
obtained under duress, caused a scandal in Paris. The prisoners
were coerced to confess that they had spat on the Cross: "Moi,
Raymond de La Fere, 21 ans, reconnais que [j'ai] crache trois fois
sur la Croix, mais de bouche et pas de coeur" ["I,
Raymond de La Fere, 21 years old, admit that I have spat three
times on the Cross, but only from my mouth and not from my
heart"]. The Templars were accused of idolatry and were
suspected of worshiping either a figure known as Baphomet or a
mummified severed head they recovered, amongst other artifacts, at
their original headquarters on the Temple Mount that many scholars
theorize might have been that of John the Baptist, among other
things. These persecutions orginated from events spring from
letters sent in 1305 to both the Templar Grand Master Jacques de
Molay and the Hospitaller Grand Master Fulk de Villaret from the
new Pope Clement V to discuss the possibility of merging the two
orders. (Born Raymond Bertrand de Got, Clement V became pope after
Philip IV bullied a deadlocked conclave into electing him, and was
himself bullied by Philip into moving the Papacy from Rome to
Avignon, ushering in the period known as the Avignon Papacy,
referred to as the "Babylonian captivity of the Papacy".)
Neither de Molay nor de Villaret were amenable to Clement V's
idea, but the Pope persisted, and in 1306 he invited both Grand
Masters to France to discuss the matter. De Molay arrived first in
early 1307, but de Villaret was delayed for several months. While
waiting, De Molay and Clement discussed criminal charges that had
been made two years earlier by an ousted Templar and were being
discussed by King Philip IV of France and his ministers. It was
generally agreed that the charges were false, but Clement sent the
king a written request for assistance in the investigation.
According to some historians, King Philip, who was already deeply
in debt to the Templars from his war against England, decided to
seize upon the rumours for his own purposes. He began pressuring
the church to take action against the order, as a way of freeing
himself from his debts. Relenting to Philip's demands, Pope
Clement then issued the papal bull Pastoralis praeeminentiae on
November 22, 1307, which instructed all Christian monarchs in
Europe to arrest all Templars and seize their assets. Pope Clement
called for papal hearings to determine the Templars' guilt or
innocence, and once freed of the Inquisitors' torture, many
Templars recanted their confessions. Some had sufficient legal
experience to defend themselves in the trials, but in 1310, having
appointed the archbishop of Sens, Philippe de Marigny, to lead the
investigation, Philip blocked this attempt, using the previously
forced confessions to have dozens of Templars burned at the stake
in Paris. With Philip threatening military action unless the pope
complied with his wishes, Pope Clement finally agreed to disband
the order, citing the public scandal that had been generated by
the confessions. At the Council of Vienne in 1312, he issued a
series of papal bulls, including Vox in excelso, which officially
dissolved the order, and Ad providam, which turned over most
Templar assets to the Hospitallers. As for the leaders of the
order, the elderly Grand Master Jacques de Molay, who had
confessed under torture, retracted his confession. Geoffroi de
Charney, Preceptor of Normandy, also retracted his confession and
insisted on his innocence. Both men were declared guilty of being
relapsed heretics, and they were sentenced to burn alive at the
stake in Paris on March 18, 1314. De Molay reportedly remained
defiant to the end, asking to be tied in such a way that he could
face the Notre Dame Cathedral and hold his hands together in
prayer. According to legend, he called out from the flames that
both Pope Clement and King Philip would soon meet him before God.
His actual words were recorded on the parchment as follows: "Dieu
sait qui a tort et a peche. Il va bientot arriver malheur a ceux
qui nous ont condamnes a mort" ("God knows who is wrong
and has sinned. Soon a calamity will occur to those who have
condemned us to death"). Pope Clement died only a month
later, and King Philip died in a hunting accident before the end
of the year. The remaining Templars around Europe were either
arrested and tried under the Papal investigation (with virtually
none convicted), absorbed into other Catholic military orders, or
pensioned off and allowed to live out their days peacefully. By
papal decree, the property of the Templars was transferred to the
Knights Hospitaller except in the Kingdoms of Castile, Aragon, and
Portugal. Portugal was the first country in Europe where they had
settled, occurring only two or three years after the order's
foundation in Jerusalem and even having presence during Portugal's
conception. The Portuguese king, Denis I, refused to pursue and
persecute the former knights, as had occurred in all other
sovereign states under the influence of the Catholic Church. Under
his protection, Templar organizations simply changed their name,
from "Knights Templar" to the reconstituted Order of
Christ and also a parallel Supreme Order of Christ of the Holy
See; both are considered successors to the Knights Templar. In
September 2001, a document known as the Chinon Parchment, dated
August 17-20 1308, written in this midst of this scandal, was
discovered in the Vatican Secret Archives by Barbara Frale,
apparently after having been filed in the wrong place in 1628. It
is a record of the trial of the Templars and shows that Clement
absolved the Templars of all heresies in 1308 before formally
disbanding the order in 1312, as did another Chinon Parchment
dated August 20, 1308 addressed to Philip IV of France, also
mentioning that all Templars that had confessed to heresy were
"restored to the Sacraments and to the unity of the Church".
This other Chinon Parchment has been well known to historians,
having been published by Etienne Baluze in 1693 and by Pierre
Dupuy in 1751. The current position of the Roman Catholic Church
is that the medieval persecution of the Knights Templar was
unjust, that nothing was inherently wrong with the order or its
rule, and that Pope Clement was pressed into his actions by the
magnitude of the public scandal and by the dominating influence of
King Philip IV, who was Clement's relative. On Sale @ 15% Off

Today, October 13, 2025

October 13, 2016: The Nobel Prize: The
Nobel Prize In Literature: The 2016 Nobel Prize In Literature: --
Bob Dylan is selected to become a recipient of The Nobel Prize In
Literature. On May 24, 1941, Bob Dylan, American
singer-songwriter, guitarist, artist, writer, painter and
producer, Nobel Prize laureate, was born Robert Allen Zimmerman in
St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota. Bob Dylan has been an
influential figure in popular music and culture for more than five
decades. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s,
when he became a reluctant "voice of a generation" with
songs such as "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times
They Are a-Changin'" that became anthems for the Civil Rights
Movement and anti-war movement. In 1965, he controversially
abandoned his early fan-base in the American folk music revival,
recording a six-minute single, "Like a Rolling Stone",
which enlarged the scope of popular music. Dylan's lyrics
incorporate a wide range of political, social, philosophical, and
literary influences. They defied existing pop-music conventions
and appealed to the burgeoning counterculture. Initially inspired
by the performances of Little Richard and the songwriting of Woody
Guthrie, Robert Johnson, and Hank Williams, Dylan has amplified
and personalized musical genres. In his recording career, Dylan
has explored many of the traditions in American song - from folk,
blues, and country to gospel, and rock and roll, and from
rockabilly to English, Scottish, and Irish folk music, embracing
even jazz and the Great American Songbook. Dylan performs on
guitar, keyboards, and harmonica. Backed by a changing lineup of
musicians, he has toured steadily since the late 1980s on what has
been dubbed "the Never Ending Tour". His accomplishments
as a recording artist and performer have been central to his
career, but his songwriting is considered his greatest
contribution. Following his self-titled debut album in 1962, which
mainly consisted of traditional folk songs, Dylan made his
breakthrough as a songwriter with the release of the 1963 album
The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, featuring "Blowin' in the Wind"
and the thematically complex composition "A Hard Rain's
a-Gonna Fall," alongside several other enduring songs of the
era. Dylan went on to release the politically charged The Times
They Are a-Changin' and the more lyrically abstract and
introspective Another Side of Bob Dylan in 1964. In 1965 and 1966
Dylan encountered controversy when he adopted the use of
electrically amplified rock instrumentation and in the space of 15
months recorded three of the most important and influential rock
albums of the 1960s, Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61
Revisited and Blonde on Blonde. In July 1966, Dylan withdrew from
touring after being injured in a motorcycle accident. During this
period he recorded a large body of songs with members of the Band,
who had previously backed Dylan on tour; these were eventually
released as the collaborative album The Basement Tapes in 1975. In
the late 1960s and early 70s, Dylan explored country music and
rural themes in John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline and New
Morning. In 1975 Dylan released his career-defining album Blood on
the Tracks followed by the critically and commercially successful
Desire the following year. In the late 1970s, Dylan became a
born-again Christian and released a series of albums of
contemporary gospel music, notably Slow Train Coming, before
returning to his more familiar rock-based idiom with Infidels.
Dylan's major works during his later career include Time Out of
Mind, "Love and Theft" and Tempest. His most recent
recordings have comprised versions of traditional American

October 13: National M & M Day: --
Kids love 'em, adults feel nostalgic eating them, and they won't
melt in your hand, just in your mouth - we're talking M & M's
here. It's National M & M Day, so get ready to celebrate.
Created in 1941, this iconic candy has been a staple for over 75
years. Enjoy the rainbow of candy colors surrounding delicious
bits of chocolate in a bag of tasty M & Ms! Invented in 1941,
these tiny little bits of candy coated chocolate have made a huge
impact on American history throughout their more than 80 years of
life! The inspiration behind M & Ms started during the Spanish
Civil War when Forrest Mars Sr. (of the Mars Candy Company), who
lived in England at the time, began making small bits of chocolate
with a candy shell coating that would keep them from melting as
easily. Following this inspiration, M & Ms were created by the
Mars Candy Company and these little candies have brought joy to
millions of people over the years. During World War II, M & Ms
were made exclusively available to the United States military who
provided them to their soldiers. Packed in cardboard tubes, these
heat resistant and easily transported candies became part of the
US soldiers' rations during the war. But it wasn't until 1950,
after the war, that M & Ms finally got their now iconic little
"m" stamp. After copycat companies came about, M &
Ms customers were encouraged with a marketing program to "look
for the 'm' on every piece". In 1981, M & Ms became the
first candy to ever go up into space! The very same reasons that
these little candies were handy for wartime rations also made them
perfect for travel into space. NASA's first space shuttle,
Columbia, took the little candies out of the earth's orbit and
into space. Now, National M & M Day is here to pay honor to
this candy that has been so much a part of American culture and is
certainly beloved all over the world! On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

October 13: International Skeptics Day:
-- Like most things, skepticism is good in moderation but, today,
on International Skeptics Day, on October 13, go ahead and
question some of your beliefs. The 'investigation' of your
assumptions can be fruitful and worthwhile. Research thus far has
not revealed an inaugural year of recognizing International
Skeptics Day, nor does skepticism itself follow a clear timeline
that would be punctuated by specific events. But as a paradigm
within which to operate, skepticism shows no loss of momentum,
with periodicals like "The Skeptic" and "The
Skeptical Inquirer" still in print, along with podcasts, TV
documentaries, and meet-up groups all over the world. The Doubting
Thomas who is reading these words should have no trouble finding
like-minded people, whatever his or her current location. The word
'skeptic' comes from the Greek word 'skepsis,' meaning
'investigation.' The skeptics in the ancient period were actual
individuals comprising a school of thought - in the literal sense
of the phrase. Their ultimate goal was 'a life without belief.' In
written arguments, a skeptic would often be found debating with a
Stoic, a Cynic, or an Epicurean - interlocutors whose main
function in the writing would be to elicit the opinions of the
skeptic for all to read. In the modern day, skepticism is
considered a sign of intelligence because it indicates a desire to
get at the real truth but skepticism in an individual can also
stem from a feeling of insufficiency on their part - "That
girl is asking me out for a dubious reason. She just wants
something." On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

October 13: International Day For
Failure: -- Celebrated with much zeal and learning around the
world on . Did you know that the Aalto University in Finland has
something to do with the creation of International Day for
Failure? It may be strange, even ironic, for a country like
Finland, in whose culture failure is not the norm, to have
initiated the idea of a day solely dedicated to the celebration of
failure. If they could embrace it, we see no reason why the rest
of us can't. International Day for Failure started as an
initiative of students at Aalto University in Finland before it
became an annually celebrated global holiday. The students
reasoned that Finland needed an increase in small start-up
businesses, but the typical Finn abhors failure and would be
averse to start-ups. The fear of failing and the stigma that may
follow discouraged many potential Finnish entrepreneurs from
venturing, hence the idea of creating a day to celebrate failure
which, they believed, would, in turn, remove the phobia for taking
risks and invariably increase the number of startups. Did it work?
Well, it's International Day of Failure today. So we'd like to
think it did. The first holiday was celebrated in 2010 by a group
of students in Finland. And by the time the second event was to be
held, it had already begun to gain huge media coverage and support
from influential Finnish people and companies. So much so that by
the third year, the group of students had organized an expansion
of the event to celebrate the Finland Day of Failure to around 17
other countries. They also had huge support from Nokia's chair of
the board of directors Jorma Ollila, and Angry Bird's creator,
Peter Vesterbacka. Even now, the events held around celebrating
the day serve as platforms for popular Finnish personalities to
share the stories of their defeats that later turned into wins.
The idea around the day is to spread the argument that making
mistakes and failing is normal and is even an invaluable part of a
person's growth and eventual success. International Day for
Failure encourages people to try new and daring things; motivates
and inspires others to succeed through sharing stories of
successful people, their failures on their way up. On Sale @ 15%

October 13: Disaster Day (International
Day For Disaster Reduction): -- An annual observance of
significance because a specialized, international forum for
discussion and exhibition of global and local initiatives for
disaster management and reduction is organized. The mission of the
U.N. General Assembly's decade-long declaration for Natural
Disaster Reduction during the 1990s was to decrease the loss of
life, property, and the disruption of socio-economic structures in
disaster-hit areas. As part of the decade-long project,
International Day of Disaster Reduction, or simply Disaster Day
emerged. The world first observed Disaster in 1989 after the U.N.
General Assembly rolled out the initiative to promote a culture of
awareness on disaster risk reduction. With this, the 1990s was
declared the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction.
Although natural disasters are spontaneous, we can prepare to
handle them and reduce the damage to a minimum through
collaborative efforts. In this regard, the U.N. and many other
organizations have created social work initiatives that have
worked together to spread awareness on how to be prepared in any
natural disaster situation. In America, the Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA), a federal institute under the U.S.
Department of Interior, leads the response to any disaster that
hits any part of the country. Since its formation in 1979, it has
worked to develop a preparedness strategy and response mechanism
against any kind of emergency, natural or manmade. Since the U.N.
General Assembly's declaration for every country to establish a
disaster management and reduction department, FEMA has focused its
attention on spreading monitoring and situational awareness,
pre-disaster evaluation, response and recovery strategy, and ways
to return to state-level operations. As part of the observance of
Disaster Day, FEMA has worked in close collaborations with the
U.N.-sponsored bodies and has encouraged representatives from
concerned organizations to come together to arrange sessions to
spread awareness on how to prepare for a disaster and tackle the
situation after a disaster hits an area. On Sale @ 15% Off

October 13, 1775: The Age Of
Enlightenment (The Enlightenment, The Age Of Reason): The Age Of
Revolution: The Atlantic Revolutions: The American Enlightenment:
The American Revolution: The History Of The United States Navy
(USN): The Continental Navy: -- The Continental Congress
establishes the Continental Navy, which is regarded as the first
establishment of what is now the United States Navy (USN). The
Continental Navy was the navy of the United States during the
American Revolutionary War. The fleet cumulatively became
relatively substantial through the efforts of the Continental
Navy's patron John Adams and vigorous Congressional support in the
face of stiff opposition, when considering the limitations imposed
upon the Patriot supply pool. The main goal of the navy was to
intercept shipments of British materiel and generally disrupt
British maritime commercial operations. The initial fleet
consisted of converted merchantmen because of the lack of funding,
manpower, and resources, with exclusively designed warships being
built later in the conflict. The vessels that successfully made it
to sea met with success only rarely, and the effort contributed
little to the overall outcome of the war. The fleet did serve to
highlight a few examples of Continental resolve, notably launching
Captains John Barry and John Paul Jones into the limelight. It
provided needed experience for a generation of officers who went
on to command conflicts which involved the early American navy.
With the war over and the Federal government in need of all
available capital, the final vessel of the Continental Navy,
Alliance, was auctioned off in 1785 to a private bidder. The
United States was without a navy for nearly a decade, a state of
affairs that exposed U.S. maritime merchant ships to a series of
attacks by the Barbary pirates. The sole armed maritime presence
between 1790 and the launching of the U.S. Navy's first warships
in 1797 was the U.S. Revenue-Marine, the primary predecessor of
the U.S. Coast Guard. Although the USRCS (United States Revenue
Cutter Service) conducted operations against the pirates, the
pirates' depredations far outstripped its abilities and Congress
passed the Naval Act of 1794 that established a permanent standing
navy on March 27, 1794. The Naval Act ordered the construction and
manning of six frigates and, by October 1797,[20] the first three
were brought into service: USS United States, USS Constellation,
and USS Constitution. Due to his strong posture on having a strong
standing Navy during this period, John Adams is "often called
the father of the American Navy". Today's United States Navy
(USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States
Armed Forces and one of the eight uniformed services of the United
States. It is the largest and most capable navy in the world and
it has been estimated that in terms of tonnage of its active
battle fleet alone, it is larger than the next 13 navies combined,
which includes 11 U.S. allies or partner nations. It has the
highest combined battle fleet tonnage and the world's largest
aircraft carrier fleet, with eleven in service, two new carriers
under construction, and five other carriers planned. With 336,978
personnel on active duty and 101,583 in the Ready Reserve, the
U.S. Navy is the third largest of the U.S. military service
branches in terms of personnel. It has 290 deployable combat
vessels and more than 3,700 operational aircraft as of June 2019.
The 21st century U.S. Navy maintains a sizable global presence,
deploying in strength in such areas as the Western Pacific, the
Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean. It is a blue-water navy with
the ability to project force onto the littoral regions of the
world, engage in forward deployments during peacetime and rapidly
respond to regional crises, making it a frequent actor in U.S.
foreign and military policy. The U.S. Navy is part of the
Department of the Navy, alongside the U.S. Marine Corps, which is
its coequal sister service. The Department of the Navy is headed
by the civilian Secretary of the Navy. The Department of the Navy
is itself a military department of the Department of Defense,
which is headed by the Secretary Of Defense. The Chief of Naval
Operations (CNO) is the most senior naval officer serving in the
Department of the Navy. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight

Tillstrom, puppeteer and the creator of Kukla, Fran and Ollie (d.
December 6, 1985) is #born Franklin Burr Tillstrom in Chicago,
Illinois, to Bert and Alice Burr Tillstrom. He attended Senn High
School in Chicago and later the University of Chicago. While still
a freshman, he accepted a job offer from the WPA-Chicago Parks
District Theatre to set up a marionette theater. Tillstrom turned
his attention to puppetry in the early 1930s and created Kukla in
1936. Kukla remained nameless until the famous
Russian-Georgian-American prima ballerina and actress Tamara
Toumanova referred to him as "Kukla", the Russian word
for "doll". Other famous puppets from Tillstrom's group
included Ollie (Oliver J. Dragon), Beulah Witch, Goultar, Cecil
Bill, and Fletcher Rabbit. In 1939, Tillstrom was invited to
present his Kuklapolitan Players at the New York World's Fair. The
following year, RCA sent him to Bermuda to perform on the first
ship-to-shore broadcast. From 1947-1957, Tillstrom was involved
with the American television puppet show Kukla, Fran and Ollie,
widely regarded as being the first children's show to appeal to
both children and adults, which starred his puppets and Fran
Allison and aired weekdays originally on WBKB-TV in Chicago,
Illinois (as Junior Jamboree in the beginning), then WNBQ-TV (the
predecessor of Chicago's WMAQ-TV) and ultimately syndicated
throughout the NBC-TV network. It occasionally returned to the air
until the mid-1980s. It was created for children, but soon watched
by more adults than children, and counted Orson Welles, John
Steinbeck, Tallulah Bankhead, Adlai Stevenson and James Thurber
among its many adult fans. It did not have a script and was
entirely ad-libbed. After the original series ended in 1957,
Tillstrom continued to work with the Kuklapolitans. Early in 1958,
Tillstrom appeared with the puppets on Polly Bergen's short-lived
NBC variety show, The Polly Bergen Show. Tillstrom, Kukla and
Ollie reunited with Fran Allison to host the CBS Children's Film
Festival from 1967 to 1977. In 1970, Kukla, Fran and Ollie
appeared on National Educational Television, taped at WTTW in
Chicago, for two seasons. In 1975, Kukla, Fran and Ollie began
another run on television with 13 new episodes. In 1977, The Kukla
and Ollie Retrospective Stage Show tours began, a creation of the
Artist-in-Residence program at Hope College. In 1978 Kukla, Burr
and Ollie joined the Broadway cast of Side by Side by Sondheim, a
revue of Stephen Sondheim songs. Tillstrom continued to perform
with his Kuklapolitan Players until his death in Palm Springs,
California in 1985. On March 23, 1986, Burr Tillstrom was inducted
into the Television Academy Hall of Fame for his creativity and
innovation in the medium. The Saugatuck Douglas Art Club in
Saugatuck, Michigan (the location of Tillstrom's longtime summer
home) dedicated a memorial to Tillstrom in 1988. The Burr
Tillstrom Collection and Archives are maintained at the Chicago
History Museum. In 2013 Tillstrom was inducted into the Chicago
Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame. Burr Tillstrom died of natural
causes in Palm Springs, California at the age of 68. He is buried

was buried there with military honors suitable to his rank, life

Groton, Province of Massachusetts Bay, when East Pepperell was

the Battle Of Bunker Hill with the orders "Do not fire until
you see the whites of their eyes", so that the rebel troops
could shoot at the enemy at the shortest possible range, and
therefore more accurately and lethally, and so conserve their

someone earlier coined this memorable saying. William Prescott
never owned slaves, and spoke out against the practice of slavery.
Prescott advocated that Massachusetts outlaw slavery. When
Massachusetts did abolish slavery in 1783, Prescott celebrated
publicly. Prescott was also outspoken about his praise for
African-American soldier Salem Poor who fought with Prescott at
Bunker Hill, going so far as to sign a letter to the court of
Massachusetts praising his conduct in battle and advocating that
he be rewarded for it. Colonel Prescott was a true patriot, full

1929) #dies in his sleep on October 13, 2022, in Tucson, Arizona.
He was 93 years old. His remains were cremated, and the ashes

in Chicago, Illinois. He later became Manager of Lunar Landing
Operations and was the Apollo Spacecraft Program Manager from 1969
to 1972. June 3, 1965 saw the launch of Gemini 4, the first
multi-day space mission by a NASA crew. Ed White, a crew member,
performs the first American spacewalk. Gemini 4 (officially Gemini
IV) was the second manned space flight in NASA's Project Gemini,
occurring in June 1965. It was the tenth manned American
spaceflight (including two X-15 flights at altitudes exceeding 100
kilometers (54 nmi)). Astronauts James McDivitt and Ed White
circled the Earth 66 times in four days, making it the first US
flight to approach the five-day flight of the Soviet Vostok 5. The
highlight of the mission was the first space walk by an American,
during which White floated free outside the spacecraft, tethered
to it, for approximately 20 minutes. Both of these accomplishments
helped the United States overcome the Soviet Union's early lead in
the Space Race. The flight also included the first attempt to make
a space rendezvous as McDivitt attempted to maneuver his craft
close to the Titan II upper stage which launched it into orbit,
but this was not successful. The flight was the first American
flight to perform many scientific experiments in space, including
use of a sextant to investigate the use of celestial navigation
for lunar flight in the Apollo program. March 3, 1969 saw NASA
launch Apollo 9 to test the lunar module. Apollo 9 was the third
manned mission in the United States Apollo space program and the
first flight of the Command/Service Module (CSM) with the Lunar
Module (LM, pronounced "Lem"). Its three-person crew,
consisting of Commander James McDivitt, Command Module Pilot David
Scott, and Lunar Module Pilot Rusty Schweickart, spent ten days in
low Earth orbit testing several aspects critical to landing on the
Moon, including the LM engines, backpack life support systems,
navigation systems, and docking maneuvers. The mission was the
second manned launch of a Saturn V rocket. After launching on
March 3, 1969, the crewmen performed the first manned flight of a
LM, the first docking and extraction of a LM, two spacewalks
(EVA), and the second docking of two manned spacecraft, two months
after the Soviets performed a spacewalk crew transfer between
Soyuz 4 and Soyuz 5. The mission proved the LM worthy of manned
spaceflight. Further tests on the Apollo 10 mission would prepare
the LM for its ultimate goal, landing on the Moon. They returned

making on stage introductory remarks in the 1966 documentary The
Beatles at Shea Stadium. He also appeared in the 1978 film Sgt.
Pepper' Lonely Hearts Club Band and had a guest appearance in the
1990s science fiction television series Babylon 5, (in "War
Without End" Part 2), playing the first officer of Babylon.
In Across the Universe the radio station call letters he used were
WEAF which were the call letters of 660 in New York before it
became WNBC. He also played a TV contest announcer in Between Time
and Timbuktu, a 1972 National Educational Television production
adapted from several short stories by Kurt Vonnegut. He was a tv
spokesperson for the Rickel chain of supermarts and home
improvement centers during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Morrow

October 13, 1909: #BOTD: #HBD! Art Tatum,
African American pianist and composer, widely considered one of
the greatest jazz piano players of all time (d. November 5, 1956)
is #born Arthur Tatum Jr. in Toledo, Ohio into the conventional
and church-going family of Arthur Tatum Sr. and Mildred Hoskins.
From infancy, Tatum had impaired vision. Several explanations for
this have been posited, most involving cataracts. As a result of
eye operations, by the age of 11, Tatum could see objects close to
him and perhaps distinguish colors. Any benefits from these
procedures were reversed, however, when he was assaulted, probably
in his early twenties. The attack left him completely blind in his
left eye and with very limited vision in his right. Despite this,
there are multiple accounts of him enjoying playing cards and
pool. Art Tatum's performances were hailed for their technical
proficiency and creativity, which set a new standard for jazz
piano virtuosity. Critic Scott Yanow wrote, "Tatum's quick
reflexes and boundless imagination kept his improvisations filled
with fresh (and sometimes futuristic) ideas that put him way ahead
of his contemporaries.". His playing encompassed the styles
of earlier musicians, while adding harmonic and rhythmic
imagination and complexity. Acclaimed for his virtuoso technique,
Tatum extended the vocabulary and boundaries of jazz piano, and
established new ground in jazz through innovative use of
reharmonization, voicing, and bitonality. Arthur Tatum Jr. grew up
in Toledo, Ohio, where he began playing piano professionally and
had his own radio program, rebroadcast nationwide, while still in
his teens. He left Toledo in 1932 and had residencies as a solo
pianist at clubs in major urban centers including New York,
Chicago, and Los Angeles. Throughout his career, Tatum also played
in after-hours venues at which he was said to be more spontaneous
and creative than in his regular paid performances. Tatum drank
large quantities of alcohol when performing; although it did not
negatively affect his playing, it damaged his health. In the
1940s, Tatum led a commercially successful trio for a short time
and began playing in more formal jazz concert settings, including
at Norman Granz-produced Jazz at the Philharmonic events. Granz
recorded Tatum extensively in solo and small group formats in the
mid-1950s, with the last session occurring only two months before
the pianist's death. Tatum was inducted into the DownBeat Jazz
Hall of Fame in 1964 and given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award
in 1989. Art Tatum died at the age of 47 of uremia at Queen of
Angels Medical Center in Los Angeles. By 1956, Tatum's health had
deteriorated due to advanced uremia. Nevertheless, in August of
that year he played to the largest audience of his career: 19,000
gathered at the Hollywood Bowl for another record producer and
concert promoter Norman Granz-led event. The next month, he had
the last of the Granz group recording sessions, with saxophonist
Ben Webster, and then played at least two concerts in October. He
was too unwell to continue touring, so returned to his home in Los
Angeles. Musicians visited him on November 4, and other pianists
played for him as he lay in bed at Queen of Angels Medical Center,
where he died the next day. He was buried at Rosedale Cemetery in
Los Angeles, California, but was moved to Forest Lawn Cemetery in
Glendale, California in 1992 by his second wife, so she could be
buried next to him. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

Simon, American singer, songwriter, guitarist, and record producer
is #born Paul Frederic Simon in Newark, New Jersey to
Hungarian-Jewish parents: Louis (1916-1995), a college professor,
double-bass player, and dance bandleader who performed under the
name "Lee Sims"; and Belle (1910-2007), an elementary
school teacher. In 1945, his family moved to the Kew Gardens Hills
section of Flushing, Queens, in New York City. Simon's musical
career has spanned over six decades. He reached fame and
commercial success as half of the duo Simon & Garfunkel,
formed in 1956 with Art Garfunkel. Simon wrote nearly all of their
songs, including US number-one singles "The Sound of
Silence", "Mrs. Robinson", and "Bridge over
Troubled Water". After Simon & Garfunkel split up in
1970, at the height of their popularity, Simon began a successful
solo career. He recorded three acclaimed albums over the following
five years. In 1986, following a career slump, he released
Graceland, an album inspired by South African township music,
which sold 14 million copies worldwide and remains his most
popular solo work. Simon also wrote and starred in the film
One-Trick Pony (1980) and co-wrote the Broadway musical The
Capeman (1998) with the poet Derek Walcott. On June 3, 2016, Simon
released his 13th solo album, Stranger to Stranger, which debuted
at number one on the Billboard Album Chart and the UK Albums
Chart. Simon has earned sixteen Grammy awards for his solo and
collaborative work, including three for Album of the Year (Bridge
Over Troubled Water, Still Crazy After All These Years, and
Graceland), and a Lifetime Achievement Award. He is a two-time
inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: first in 1990 as a
member of Simon & Garfunkel and again in 2001 for his solo
career. In 2006 he was selected as one of the "100 People Who
Shaped the World" by Time. In 2011, Rolling Stone named Simon
one of the 100 greatest guitarists, and in 2015 he was ranked
eighth in their list of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time.
Simon was the first recipient of the Library of Congress's
Gershwin Prize for Popular Song in 2007. Simon has been married
three times, first to Peggy Harper in 1969. They had a son, Harper
Simon in 1972, and divorced in 1975. The song "Train in the
Distance" from Simon's 1983 album Hearts and Bones is about
this relationship. Simon's 1972 song "Run That Body Down",
from his second solo album, casually mentions both himself and his
then-wife ("Peg") by name. Paul and Peggy, misheard as
Al and Betty by Pierre Boulez, are also referenced in Paul Simon's
1986 hit single "You Can Call Me Al". In the late 1970s,
Simon lived in New York City next door to Saturday Night Live
creator Lorne Michaels, who has been described as Simon's "best
friend" during the period. He had a brief relationship with
Shelley Duvall and they lived together for two years until she
introduced him to Carrie Fisher. His second marriage, from 1983 to
1984, was to Fisher, with whom he'd had an intermittent
relationship since mutual friend Richard Dreyfuss served as their
"matchmaker" in 1978. Simon proposed to Fisher after a
New York Yankees game. The song "Hearts and Bones" was
written about this relationship, and the song "Graceland"
is also thought to be about seeking solace from the end of this
relationship by taking a road trip. A year after divorcing, Simon
and Fisher resumed their relationship, which lasted for several
years. The final song in the sequence of three about Carrie Fisher
is "She Moves On". This song marks the end of the
post-marriage relationship, and was an album track on Simon's 1990
album The Rhythm of The Saints. Simon married singer Edie Brickell
on May 30, 1992, to whom he has remained married since. They have
three children: Adrian, Lulu, and Gabriel. On Sale @ 15% Off

McKimson, American animator and illustrator, best known for his
work on the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of cartoons
from Warner Bros. Cartoons and later DePatie-Freleng Enterprises
(d. September 29, 1977) is #born Robert Porter McKimson in Denver,
Colorado. Robert Porter McKimson Sr. wrote and directed many
animated cartoon shorts starring Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky
Pig, Foghorn Leghorn, Hippety Hopper, Speedy Gonzales, and the
Tasmanian Devil, among other characters. He also developed Bugs
Bunny's design in the 1943 short Tortoise Wins by a Hare. In 1930,
McKimson was hired by Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising, first doing
ink-and-paint duties for the first Looney Tunes, then becoming an
in-betweener (creator of intermediate frames, called inbetweens,
between two keyframes to create the illusion of movement by
smoothly transitioning one image into another) before becoming an
animator by 1931. At that time he had an accident that gave him a
concussion. As a result, he was able to visualize better, thus
increasing his production and animation. He was the head animator
and go-to guy in the late 1930s at the studio, which overwhelmed
him. Eventually he worked exclusively with Bob Clampett. He was
offered a directorial position by Leon Schlesinger in 1938, but
declined, allowing the position to go to animator Chuck Jones. He
accepted his own directorial position in late 1944, when Frank
Tashlin left Warner Bros. to direct live-action films. McKimson's
first Warner Bros. cartoon that he finished, The Return of Mr.
Hook, was released in 1945 exclusively for the U.S. Navy. His
first theatrical short, Daffy Doodles, was released in early April
1946. His third theatrical short entitled Acrobatty Bunny would be
the first Bugs Bunny short McKimson directed. It was released in
June 1946. His better-known efforts include Hillbilly Hare,
A-Lad-In His Lamp, Stupor Duck, The Windblown Hare, Walky Talky
Hawky, and Big Top Bunny. McKimson created characters like Foghorn
Leghorn and the Tasmanian Devil, as well as directing every
Hippety Hopper/Sylvester pairing. He also created Speedy Gonzales
for the 1953 short Cat-Tails for Two and directed many others
periodically (along with Friz Freleng and other directors) for the
remainder of his theatrical career. Robert McKimson died of a
sudden heart attack while having lunch with co-workers Friz
Freleng and David H. DePatie, two weeks before his 67th birthday.
Only two days before, September 27, McKimson's doctor declared him
in good health for a 66-year-old (despite having a case of
emphysema after years of smoking), and, according to Freleng,
McKimson then referred to his family history of living past 90 and
bragged, "I'm going to be around after you guys are gone!"
At the time of his death, he had recently completed directing
Misterjaw and had begun work on Baggy Pants and the Nitwits.

Confession AKA L'aveu (1970) Yves Montand DVD, Download, USB Drive
Today, October 13, 2025
October 13, 1921: #BOTD: Yves Montand,
Italian-French actor, singer and dancer (d. November 9, 1991) is
#born Ivo Livi in Monsummano Terme, Italy, to Giovanni Livi, a
broom manufacturer, and Giuseppina Simoni, a devout Catholic,
while her husband held strong Communist beliefs. Montand's family
left for France in 1923 because of Italy's Fascist regime. He grew
up in Marseille, where, as a young man, he worked in his sister's
beauty salon (Salon de Coiffure), and later on the docks. He began
a career in show business as a music-hall singer. In 1944, he was
discovered by Edith Piaf in Paris and she made him part of her
act. Montand achieved international recognition as a singer and
actor, starring in many films. His recognizably crooner songs,
especially those about Paris, became instant classics. He was one
of the best known performers at Bruno Coquatrix's Paris Olympia
music hall, and toured with musicians including Didi Duprat. In
October 1947, he sang "Mais qu'est-ce que j'ai ?" (music
by Henri Betti and lyrics by Edith Piaf) at the Theatre de
l'Etoile. Betti also asked him to sing "C'est si bon"
but Montand refused. Following the success of the recording of
this song by the Soeurs Etienne in 1948, he decided to record it.
Montand was also very popular in the Soviet Union and Eastern
Europe, where he did a concert tour in 1956-57; in later life,
however, he supported right-wing causes. During his career,
Montand acted in American motion pictures as well as on Broadway.
He was nominated for a Cesar Award for Best Actor in 1980 for I
comme Icare and again in 1984 for Garcon! In 1986, after his
international box-office draw power had fallen off considerably,
the 65-year-old Montand gave one of his best remembered
performances, as the scheming uncle in Jean de Florette,
co-starring Gerard Depardieu, and Manon des Sources (both 1986),
co-starring Emmanuelle Beart. The film was a worldwide critical
hit and revived Montand's profile in the US, where he made an
appearance on Late Night with David Letterman. In 1951, he married
Simone Signoret, and they co-starred in several films throughout
their careers. The marriage was, by all accounts, fairly
harmonious, lasting until her death in 1985, although Montand had
a number of well-publicized affairs, notably with Marilyn Monroe,
with whom he starred in one of her last films, Let's Make Love. He
was the stepfather to Signoret's daughter from her prior marriage,
Catherine Allegret. Montand's only child, Valentin, his son by his
second wife, Carole Amiel, was born in 1988. In a paternity suit
that rocked France, another woman accused Montand of being the
father of her daughter and went to court to obtain a DNA sample
from him. Montand refused, but the woman persisted even after his
death. In a court ruling that made international headlines, the
woman won the right to have Montand exhumed and a sample taken.
The results indicated that he was probably not the girl's
biological father. He supported left-wing causes during the 1950s
and 1960s, and attended Communist festivals and meetings, but in
later life, he supported right-wing causes. Signoret and Montand
had a home in Autheuil-Authouillet, Normandy, where the main
village street is named after him. In his later years he
maintained a home in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, Provence, until his
death from a heart attack in November 1991, aged 70. In an
interview, Jean-Jacques Beineix said, "[H]e died on the set
[in Senlis, France of IP5: The Island of Pachyderms]... on the
very last day, after his very last shot. It was the very last
night and we were doing retakes. He finished what he was doing and
then he just died. And the film tells the story of an old man who
dies from a heart attack, which is the same thing that happened!"
Montand is interred next to his first wife, Simone Signoret, in
Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. In 2004, Catherine Allegret,
Signoret's daughter from her first marriage to director Yves
Allegret, alleged in her autobiography Un monde a l'envers (A
World Upside Down) that she had been sexually abused by her
stepfather from the age of five; his behaviour apparently
continuing for many years. and that he had a "more than
equivocal attitude to her" as she got older. However she also
claimed to have been reconciled to him in the latter years of his
life. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till Midnight PT!

October 13, 54 A.D.: #DOTD: #RIP:
Claudius (Latin: Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus),
Roman emperor from 41 to 54 AD (b. August 1, 10 BC) #dies after
eating mushrooms poisoned by his wife, the Empress Agrippina. He
is buried in The Mausoleum Of Augustus in Rome, Italy. A member of
the Julio-Claudian dynasty, Claudius was the son of Drusus and
Antonia Minor. He was born at Lugdunum in Gaul, the first (and
until Trajan, only) Roman Emperor to be born outside Italy.
Because he was afflicted with a limp and slight deafness due to
sickness at a young age, his family ostracized him and excluded
him from public office until his consulship, shared with his
nephew Caligula in 37. Claudius' infirmity probably saved him from
the fate of many other nobles during the purges of Tiberius's and
Caligula's reigns; potential enemies did not see him as a serious
threat. His survival led to his being declared Emperor by the
Praetorian Guard after Caligula's assassination, at which point he
was the last man of his family. Despite his lack of experience,
Claudius proved to be an able and efficient administrator. He was
also an ambitious builder, constructing many new roads, aqueducts,
and canals across the Empire. During his reign the Empire began
the conquest of Britain (if the earlier invasions of Britain by
Caesar and Caligula's aborted attempts are not counted). Having a
personal interest in law, he presided at public trials, and issued
up to twenty edicts a day. He was seen as vulnerable throughout
his reign, particularly by elements of the nobility. Claudius was
constantly forced to shore up his position; this resulted in the
deaths of many senators. These events damaged his reputation among
the ancient writers, though more recent historians have revised
this opinion. Many authors contend that he was murdered by his own
wife. After his death in 54 AD (at age of 63), his grand-nephew,
step-son, and adopted son Nero succeeded him as Emperor. His
13-year reign (slightly longer than Nero's) would not be surpassed
by any successors until that of Domitian, who reigned for 15
years. He was a descendant of the Octavii Rufi (through Gaius
Octavius), Julii Caesares (through Julia Minor and Julia Antonia),
and the Claudii Nerones (through Nero Claudius Drusus). He was a
step-grandson (through his father Drusus) and great-nephew
(through his mother Antonia Minor) of Augustus. He was a nephew of
Tiberius through his father, Tiberius' brother. Through his
brother Germanicus, Claudius was an uncle of Caligula and a
great-uncle of Nero. Claudius looms large in modern literature,
film and radio. The best known fictional representation of the
Emperor Claudius was contained in the books I, Claudius and
Claudius the God (published in 1934 and 1935, respectively) by
Robert Graves, both written in the first-person to give the reader
the impression that they are Claudius' autobiography. Graves
employed a fictive artifice to suggest that they were recently
discovered, genuine translations of Claudius' writings. Claudius'
extant letters, speeches, and sayings were incorporated into the
text (mostly in the second book, Claudius the God), to add
authenticity. Graves's interpretation of the story owes much to
the histories of Gaius Cornelius Tacitus, Plutarch and
(especially) Suetonius (Lives of the Twelve Caesars). Graves said
that after reading the accounts of Claudius by Suetonius and
Tacitus "I knew there was a mistake somewhere, and that one
day, I'd write the real story." Graves translated Suetonius
before writing the novels. Graves claimed that after he read
Suetonius, Claudius came to him in a dream one night and demanded
that his real story be told. Graves also claimed that he made a
deal with Claudius that he would write "the real story".
provided the book covered the 4,000 Pounds Sterling that Graves
needed to cover losses in a bad land deal; the first edition of
the book raised 8,000 Pounds Sterling). The life of Claudius
provided Graves with a way to write about the first four Emperors
of Rome (Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, and Claudius) from an
intimate point of view. In addition, the real Claudius was a
trained historian and is known to have written an autobiography
(now lost) in eight books that covered the same time period. I,
Claudius is a first-person narrative of Roman history from the
reigns of Augustus to Caligula; Claudius the God is written as a
later addition documenting Claudius' own reign. In 1937, director
Josef Von Sternberg attempted a film version of I, Claudius, with
Charles Laughton as Claudius. However, the lead actress, Merle
Oberon, suffered a near-fatal car accident and the movie was never
finished. The surviving reels were featured in the BBC documentary
The Epic That Never Was (1965). Graves's two books were the basis
for a British television adaptation I, Claudius, produced by the
BBC. The series starred Derek Jacobi as Claudius and was broadcast
in 1976 on BBC2.It was a substantial critical success, and won
several BAFTA awards. The series was later broadcast in the United
States on Masterpiece Theatre in 1977. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

October 13, 1914: Great Inventions: The
Gas Mask: -- Garrett Morgan, African American inventor,
businessman, and community leader, patents the world's first gas
mask, which is still the basis of all gas masks ever since, and
which immediately proved its worth as poison gas was already being
used as a weapon during the First World War, which had begun only
a few months before on July 28th that year. On July 25, 1916,
Garrett Morgan used his gas mask in a daring rescue of six people
from a gas-filled tunnel beneath Lake Erie, four miles out from
Cleveland, Ohio. The day prior, on July 24, 1916, a construction
crew working on the construction of the tunnel stumbled across a
natural gas pocket, causing a sudden explosion in the middle of
the night which killed, injured, and buried several workers. As
the gas filled the tunnel, the initial rescuers succumbed to the
toxic fumes and their fate below ground. Ten of them died. The
Cleveland police department rang on Garrett Augustus Morgan, "the
inventor of Harlem Avenue." Known for his multiple
inventions, he was called up near four in the morning, urged to
bring as many of his recently patented "safety hoods" as
possible. Morgan's safety hoods covered the entire face and
connected to long, filtered tubes that dangled low near the
ground. As hot smoke and fumes rose in the air, cleaner air below
could be breathed more safely-and filtered more
effectively-through the mask's tubes. Garrett Morgan called his
brother, Frank, and with his neighbor William Roots and other
volunteers, loaded his car with 20 of his helmets and rushed to
the scene. Garrett, Frank, and two volunteers descended to
retrieve the fallen rescuers: although ten had already died, they
carried out the rest. Having demonstrated the effectiveness of the
hood, the rescue began in earnest. Throughout the night and early
morning, rescuers, now donned in Morgan's protective equipment,
dug out the remaining survivors of the explosion. Garrett Morgan
was born Garrett Augustus Morgan on March 5, 1877 in Claysville,
Bourbon County, Kentucky. His most notable inventions were the
three-position traffic signal still in use today; the smoke hood,
the first gas mask, and a chemical hair-processing and
straightening solution. He created a successful company based on
his hair product inventions along with a complete line of haircare
products. He became involved in the civic and political
advancement of African Americans, especially in and around
Cleveland, Ohio. The first American-made automobiles were
introduced to consumers just before the turn of the twentieth
century. At the time, pedestrians, bicycles, animal-drawn wagons
and motor vehicles all had to share the same roads. To deal with
the growing problem of traffic accidents, a number of different
versions of traffic signaling devices began to be developed
simultaneously, starting around 1913. Detroit Police Officer
William Potts invented the modern-day traffic light in 1920,
however it only had two positions. Garret Morgan, having witnessed
an accident at an intersection, filed a patent for a traffic
control device which also had a third "warning" position
two years later, in 1922. The patent was granted in 1923. There
were several other such three position systems invented prior to
Morgan's, some of which had audible warnings, but it is the Morgan
traffic light that proved to be the best, and the one that we
continue to use today. Garrett Morgan died on July 27, 1963 at age
86. He is buried at the Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland. On Sale @

Tho helped found the Indochinese Communist Party. French colonial
authorities imprisoned him from 1930 to 1936 and again from 1939
to 1944. After his release in 1945, he helped lead the Viet Minh,
the Vietnamese independence movement, against the French, until
the Geneva Accords were signed in 1954. In 1948, he was in South
Vietnam as Deputy Secretary, Head of the Organization Department
of Cochinchina Committee Party. He then joined the Lao Dong
Politburo of the Vietnam Workers' Party in 1955, now the Communist
Party of Vietnam. Tho oversaw the Communist insurgency that began
in 1956 against the South Vietnamese government. In 1963 Tho
supported the purges of the Party surrounding Resolution 9. From
1978 to 1982 Le Duc Tho was named by Hanoi to act as chief advisor
to the Kampuchean United Front for National Salvation (FUNSK) and
later to the nascent People's Republic of Kampuchea. Le Duc Tho's
mission was to ensure that Khmer nationalism would not override
Vietnam's interests in Cambodia after the Khmer Rouge was
overthrown. Le Duc Tho was the Standing Member of the Central
Committee's Secretariat of the Party from 1982 to 1986 and later
became the Advisor of Party's Central Committee. On Sale @ 15% Off

October 13, 1754: #BOTD: #HBD! Molly
Pitcher, water carrier at the Battle of Monmouth in 1778 during
the American Revolution (d. January 22, 1832) is #born Mary Ludwig
near Trenton, New Jersey. After her husband, artilleryman John
Hays, collapsed, she took his place at his cannon. Since various
Molly Pitcher tales grew in the telling, many historians regard
Molly Pitcher as folklore rather than history, or suggest that
Molly Pitcher may be a composite image inspired by the actions of
a number of real women. The name itself may have originated as a
nickname given to women who carried water to men on the
battlefield during War. Mary Ludwig Hays died in Carlisle,
Pennsylvania at the approximate age of 87. She is buried in the
Old Graveyard in Carlisle under the name "Molly McCauley"
due to her second marriage being to John McCauley. A statue of
"Molly Pitcher," standing alongside a cannon, is also in
the cemetery; however, according to that monument, unveiled July
4, 1876, long after Mary/"Molly"'s death, the year she
died is marked as "January 1833," not January 1832 --
and the monument also records she was only "Aged 70 years,"
which (probably erroneously) would place her birth year at 1763,
instead of 1754 as noted here. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount Till

Thatcher talking with David Frost/Oleg Gordievsky Doc MP4 DVD
Today, October 13, 2025
October 13, 1925: #BOTD: Margaret
Thatcher, English lawyer and politician, Prime Minister of the
United Kingdom (d. April 8, 2013) is #born Margaret Hilda Roberts
in Grantham, Lincolnshire. Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness
Thatcher, LG, OM, PC, FRS, FRIC (nee Roberts) was a British
stateswoman who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979
to 1990 and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990.
She was the longest-serving British prime minister of the 20th
century and the first woman to have been appointed. A Soviet
journalist dubbed her the "Iron Lady", a nickname that
became associated with her uncompromising politics and leadership
style. As Prime Minister, she implemented policies that have come
to be known as Thatcherism. A research chemist before becoming a
barrister, Thatcher was elected Member of Parliament for Finchley
in 1959. Edward Heath appointed her Secretary Of State for
Education and Science in his Conservative government. In 1975,
Thatcher defeated Heath in the Conservative Party leadership
election to become Leader of the Opposition and became the first
woman to lead a major political party in the United Kingdom. She
became Prime Minister after winning the 1979 general election. On
moving into 10 Downing Street, Thatcher introduced a series of
political and economic initiatives intended to reverse high
unemployment and Britain' struggles in the wake of the Winter of
Discontent and an ongoing recession. Her political philosophy and
economic policies emphasised deregulation (particularly of the
financial sector), flexible labour markets, the privatisation of
state-owned companies, and reducing the power and influence of
trade unions. Thatcher' popularity during her first years in
office waned amid recession and increasing unemployment, until
victory in the 1982 Falklands War and the recovering economy
brought a resurgence of support, resulting in her decisive
re-election in 1983. She survived an assassination attempt in
1984. Thatcher was re-elected for a third term in 1987. During
this period her support for a Community Charge (referred to as the
"poll tax") was widely unpopular, and her opposition to
the European Community were not shared by others in her Cabinet.
She resigned as Prime Minister and party leader in November 1990,
after Michael Heseltine launched a challenge to her leadership.
After retiring from the Commons in 1992, she was given a life
peerage as Baroness Thatcher (of Kesteven in the County of
Lincolnshire) which entitled her to sit in the House of Lords. She
died of a stroke at the Ritz Hotel, London, England at the age of
87 after suffering a stroke. Reactions to the news of Thatcher's
death were widely mixed across the UK. She received a ceremonial
funeral, including full military honours, with a church service at
St Paul's Cathedral on April 17. Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke
of Edinburgh attended her funeral, marking only the second and
final time in the Queen's reign that she attended the funeral of
any of her former prime ministers, after that of Churchill, who
received a state funeral in 1965. After the service at St Paul's,
Thatcher's body was cremated at Mortlake, where her husband had
been cremated. On September 28, a service for Thatcher was held in
the All Saints Chapel of the Royal Hospital Chelsea's Margaret
Thatcher Infirmary. In a private ceremony, Thatcher's ashes were
interred in the hospital's grounds, next to her husband's. Always
a controversial figure, she has nonetheless been lauded as one of
the greatest, most influential and widest-known politicians in
British history, even as arguments over Thatcherism persist. On

October 13: International Civility For
The Girl Child Day: -- A day to honor, promote, and support a
girl's right to make her own decisions. It is a celebration of the
wisdom, tenacity, and intellect of girls, who are fully capable of
making their own choices - just as boys their age are. The day
prompts girls to follow the 'golden rule' and achieve whatever
they want in life. Brought into existence by American civility
expert Louisa Akaiso in 2020, the holiday motivates us to fight
for a world in which girls have the liberty and civility to do
whatever they want in life. Women and girls live lesser lives in
fear and anticipation of male violence. In a world in which girls
are commanded, overruled, threatened, and silenced for expressing
their thoughts, the observation encourages them to find their
voice, develop leadership qualities, and embrace their flaws. Tis'
the season to champion Girlpower. The day is inspired by the
Sustainable Development Goals of U.N. Women. Every woman and girl
must have the liberty to chase their potential, live a life that's
free of any form of violence, and express their views without a
threat of retribution. This day seeks to restore the dignity of
the life of a girl. For her to exude greatness, they need to
embrace their uniqueness. Through legislation and retrospection,
we can end all forms of discrimination against girls everywhere in
the world. The day urges us to identify and eliminate all forms of
violence against women in private and public places, including
human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Liberated girls grow up
to be free women who carry nations forward. From the moment that
they can, girls must make decisions about their education,
careers, and personal lives. An investment in girls from the very
beginning of their lives promises a more prosperous and equitable
future. Girls are half of humanity, and the world awaits their
input as we seek to battle growing crises such as climate change,
economic growth, political conflict, and global sustainability. On

October 13: Breast Cancer Awareness Day:
-- A time to gain and spread knowledge of what sufferers are up
against and how society can help. Metastatic means that what began
as a case of early-stage breast cancer has metastasized, or spread
to other organs (lungs, bones, etc) outside the breasts, and is
now considered to be stage four cancer. At this point the only
care option is to treat the advanced cancer and its side effects,
including anxiety; there is no cure for metastatic breast cancer
as of this writing. Treatments may include surgeries and
chemotherapy, as well as possible clinical trials of new drugs,
which along with other palliative care can help improve quality of
life and lengthen life span itself. Metastatic Breast Cancer
Awareness Day is part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and
presents an opportunity for us to increase awareness and
visibility for those who are championing and fighting for
scientific advances. In 2009 the House and Senate unanimously
passed a resolution to recognize one day of Breast Cancer
Awareness Month, October, as specifically devoted to metastatic
breast cancer (MBC). The best part is how the proposal reached the
floors of Congress to begin with. A group of nine MBC patients and
their families had traveled to Washington DC and picketed and
demonstrated, and these brave souls were able to catch the
attention (with the help of phone-wielding friends back home) of
the right people to initiate a vote. But this is no time to fall
into complacency. The pinpointing of one day merely means that,
now that the word is out, the onus is upon the public to take
action. As stated by the Metastatic Breast Cancer Network, "[n]ow
it is up to every metastatic breast cancer patient and those who
love and support them to find ways to make use of this day_to
further our cause to support those living with the disease and
demand research to find treatments to extend our lives." So
learn the facts and stand strong with your fam, on National
Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day. On Sale @ 15% Off Discount

October 13: National No Bra Day: -- A day
to encourage women to go braless to raise breast cancer awareness.
It had first been observed on July 9, 2011; within three years, it
had moved to the 13th day of the National Breast Cancer Awareness
Month, October. Users on social media are encouraged to post using
the hashtag #NoBraDay to promote awareness of breast cancer
symptoms and to encourage gender equality. Some users on social
media sites also encourage women to post pictures of themselves
not wearing a bra. Some women embrace No Bra Day as a political
statement while others prefer the comfort of discarding what they
view as a restrictive, uncomfortable garment. The observance has
spread worldwide. The event was spun off a medical event in
Toronto, Canada, that encourages breast cancer survivors to
consider reconstructive surgery. First held on October 19, 2011,
the medical event was named BRA (Breast Reconstruction Awareness)
Day. It was adapted by an anonymous individual who conceived of No
Bra Day as a way to encourage women to enjoy being braless and to
become knowledgeable about breast cancer symptoms. The day is
controversial as some see it as sexualizing and exploiting women's
bodies while at the same time belittling a serious disease. On
